What Are Thermal Ribbons?

Thermal ribbons are what make thermal transfer printing work. The ribbon sits between the printhead and your label, and when heat is applied, it transfers ink onto the label to create crisp text, barcodes, or images.

There are three main kinds: wax, wax-resin, and resin. Wax is great for paper labels, wax-resin adds extra durability for synthetics like polypropylene, and resin is built for the toughest jobs where labels need to hold up against chemicals, heat, or rough conditions.

Ribbons also come in two types—coated side in (CSI) and coated side out (CSO). That simply means which side of the ribbon has the ink coating, and it's important to use the right one for your printer.

They're made to work with popular printers like Zebra, SATO, Datamax, TSC, Printronix, Intermec, and more. Picking the right ribbon for your label material helps you get the best print quality and makes sure your labels last as long as you need them to.
